After skating through most of the year relatively unscathed, tight ends were hit hard by injuries in Week 12. Jimmy Graham was lost for the rest of the season due to a torn patellar tendon (an injury from which few athletes ever truly recover). Furthermore, Rob Gronkowski and Tyler Eifert could miss multiple games.
Replacing elite players at such a shallow position is difficult at any time of the year, but becomes even more of a challenge with so many fantasy teams trying to lock down a spot in the playoffs this week. As a result, owners are going to need to take some chances with some lesser-known tight ends – making it perhaps the most significant story line of Week 13:
Gronkowski has scored 63 touchdowns in 76 regular-season games during his six-year NFL career, easily setting the standard at his position and making him nearly impossible to replace him in fantasy. Thankfully, the New England Patriots have a capable replacement in Scott Chandler, who was already ticketed for more work due to the rash of injuries the team has suffered at wide receiver.
Desperate owners could do much worse than turn to Chandler for whatever length of time…
