Sherman to fund student's scholarship after promise

Last year, Richard Sherman told Varina High School (Va.) student Hershai James that he would personally fund her scholarship if she made the honor roll as a senior.

One year later, James lived up to her side of the deal, and so will the Seahawks cornerback. James was named to the Varina honor roll and she’ll be attending Norfolk State with that scholarship, courtesy of Sherman.

According to the Richmond Times-Dispatch, Sherman is honoring the year-old promise he made with James after learning of her improved grades. Via richmond.com:

Sherman remembered the conversation and said he would gladly honor the promise.

“It goes back to knowledge is power and if you have knowledge you’re going to be as powerful as you ever want to be,” said Sherman, who graduated from Stanford University in 2010. “Nobody stops anybody from reading and educating themselves. Mike is only trying to empower these kids to be everything that they can be and if we can help with that with our presence, with our (autographed) jerseys (for an auction), with our words, we’ll do everything we can.”
