McEnroe: Trump offered to pay him to play Serena

How close were we to yet another Battle of the Sexes?

According to tennis legend John McEnroe, there was someone willing to pay to pit him against Serena Williams or her sister Venus: Donald Trump.

McEnroe appeared on The Dan Patrick Show to talk about the controversy he continues to be mired in – after he said the younger Williams would be ranked “700th” if she played on the men’s side – and was asked why people have a problem with his comments.

He wasn’t sure, but he mentioned the Bobby Riggs match against Billie Jean King and a match between Jimmy Connors and Martina Navratilova that’s made the idea of men playing women intriguing. Then he dropped this little nugget:

“Over the course of time, people including our now-president – he wasn’t president at the time – have offered me sums of money to play Serena or Venus. I don’t know why I’m always the guy they want to play … But at any rate, I believe I have some ability left and I had pride when I played. Why don’t they ask her to play Roger Federer or Rafael Nadal on clay, see how that goes?”

So why didn’t he take those offers?
