Compared with his interview on CBS This Morning on Tuesday, John McEnroe had a more relaxed conversation on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert that night. Although, Colbert immediately questioned McEnroe’s controversial claim that Serena Williams would be ranked 700th if she played on the men’s tennis circuit – “You cannot be serious.”
“It didn’t go over big with my daughters either,” McEnroe said in response to the show’s booing audience.
McEnroe also said people ask him all the time if he thinks he could beat Williams.
“My girls don’t think I can beat her now. I thought I could beat her. She’s pregnant, so maybe I should play her now, I’d have a better chance. But either way, I wish her the absolute best. She’s the best thing that’s happened to American tennis in the last 10, 15 years.”
Colbert opened the door for McEnroe to explain the line of questioning in the NPR interview that led to his comments about Williams only being the greatest female tennis player. McEnroe explained, “I think she’s absolutely tremendous,” but he stands by his original statement.
