It was in March that Jeff Van Gundy went on a rant during an ABC broadcast of an NBA game about resting players. He had good reason.
He was part of the group calling the national televised game between the Golden State Warriors at San Antonio Spurs game in which Steph Curry, Kevin Durant, Andre Iguodala, Klay Thompson and Draymond Green didn’t play for the Warriors are Kawhi Leonard, LaMarcus Aldridge and Tony Parker didn’t play for the Spurs.
It was a game played mostly by backups and Van Gundy said: “Once again the fans are told, you don’t matter. Pay us up front, we’ll take your money and then we’ll give you whatever product we want to.”
Durant, Leonard and Aldridge missed because of injuries. The others were out because of rest. At the time, Van Gundy made it clear he didn’t agree with that tactic.
As the NBA Finals gets ready to tip off Thursday, Van Gundy wants nothing to do with the suggestion that resting during the season helped the Warriors or Cleveland Cavaliers.
