Tim Hardaway Jr.’s second act in New York can now begin. The Atlanta Hawks chose not to match the Knicks’ offer sheet for Hardaway on Saturday, said his agent, Mark Bartelstein, allowing him to rejoin the organization that drafted him.
The deal gives the Knicks a young, talented guard, although at the inflated price of $71 million over four years. The Knicks made an expensive offer to Hardaway to deter Atlanta from matching it.
While the Knicks succeeded in claiming a restricted free agent, the Nets may not be so fortunate. They were waiting to hear whether the Washington Wizards will match their four-year, $106 million contract offer for the small forward Otto Porter. The Wizards had until 11:59 p.m. Saturday to to match the Nets’ offer.
