Fantasy story lines: Watson, Diggs making most of opportunities

One of the oddities in any NFL season is how a player can go from a fantasy afterthought to a consistent offensive weapon.

Owners saw examples of that phenomenon last week as fortune smiled on Stefon Diggs, 21, in the second start of his career and on Benjamin Watson, 34, in the twilight of his.

Are one or two good performances enough to justify putting these players into fantasy lineups? That’s one of the questions fantasy owners are asking in Week 7.

Diggs’ town

In two games, Diggs has gone from regular inactive to potential starter – in fantasy as well as reality. The rookie fifth-rounder is already the second-leading receiver for the Minnesota Vikings, tallying 13 catches on 19 targets for 216 yards. (By comparison, “leading” receiver Mike Wallace has 10 receptions for 106 yards on 19 targets over the same span.)

While Diggs may have taken Charles Johnson’s starting job, it would be a mistake to believe Johnson is going to fall completely out of the receiver mix, which will probably lead to fewer targets for everyone involved.
